Almost impossible to get into the dc universe, too many series, crossovers

I feel like a chicken with it’s head cutoff trying to start getting into the comics, I don’t want to start with rebirth, they’re is way too many bat series. All the crossovers and events, the contradictions, tips welcome

For me this one of the main reasons I fell in love with the DCU. There was/is so much to go back and catch up on.

I guess its an acquired taste. But for me it’s delicious.

My best advice would be to start with series post Crisis on Infinite Earths (COIE). Anything from 1986/87. Main titles like Bats, Supes, etc.

There are some great recommendation threads around these here parts- you can find one of them here:

You can also search our Comics section by scrolling to the bottom and locating “Browse All”. On the right side you’ll see a section called “Get To Know”, where you can select a character you’re interested in to be recommended highlighted issues.

We ALSO have lots of book clubs you can find in the “Comic Books” category of these forums  Reading along with other fans could be a great way to take your first bite!

Hope this helps, and welcome to the vast DC Universe!

Start with The New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke for the best and most accessible Justice League/DC Universe story.

Start with two videos to remove any gaps in your background. It will take less than three hours of your time

Secret Origins History of DC Comics

Justice League The New Frontier

Over at Support Forum I just listed a group of great Start Reading various characters articles that were in the News Section.

I believe part of the links above are links to some of these articles.

If you think DC is Bad, Marvel is 10x worse! They’ll have 6 events going on at the same time and haven’t stopped oversaturatting the market with em since 2005!

Take it from someone who’s been reading comics since then were 7, once you get started it’s not that hard to sort DC’s comic works out.

Not a big marvel fan, they’ve got some of my favorite characters but the darkness of dc has always interested me more than most marvel stuff, the only marvel comics I buy are star wars, I’ve read thousands of comics, and a lot of dc ones here and there but pretty new to the Dc comic universe on the large scale.

I like green arrow, Martian Manhunter, The trinity of course, Green lantern, The Flash, Nightwing, Suicide Squad, teen titans, Aquaman, Captain Atom and a lot more.

The only advice I can give is to fake it til you make it. I mean, I’m sure you are not the only one to feel this way.

Just jump into something. It’s really that easy.

You don’t need to know the entire history of the DC Universe. Don’t overthink continuities, ages, eras, creative team runs, events and so on. Very simply find that one title that looks interesting to you and go from there.

You’ll be amazed at how quickly you get consumed by the awe-inspiring wonderment that is DC.

@ Generalskywalker1.88285 Yeah it’s daunting, but so much fun and worth it. Honestly you’ll be surprised how quickly you start burning through 'em.

Oh and always 'member… Big Belly Burger has the best Soder in town!

I used to be daunted, too, by the whole tryin’ to keep up with the Universe thing. Soon sponging enough details becomes almost intuitive. Just float through the panels!

@DCCC I like to get Soder from Big Belly, then take it home and mix it with a Jim Lee created Whak Soda myself

Lol @Vroom

What Vroom said, I was really intimidated by all the options when I got back into DC this year too but eventually I just dove in.

For me I kinda thought back to my first DC comic. I had no idea what was going on or who the characters were, but it gave me a sense of excitement and adventure. From there I just had to know more and it inevitably led me into the larger DC universe.

Just know you don’t have to force it and nobody expects you to be an all knowing omnibus. There won’t be a quiz lol! Even a few pages can be enough of a dive and if the story doesn’t excite you the way Star Wars does (or similar level) it’s ok to put it down and try something else.

Hope it all works out and if you get too bogged down in choosing, remember what the blue lanterns say… all will be well!

If you’re fairly familiar with the characters, I would suggest just jumping into an event like Infinite Crisis (or any of the various crises guess). Now, not all the tie ins, because that would take years to do. Just read the main series. Then you get to go to 52. 52 is one of the best crossover series on here, and once you’re comfortable with that, you’ll be ready for anything DCU has to throw at you. You’ll be introduced to a bunch of smaller characters who you can then explore. And once you e done that, you’ve officially entered the DC rabbit hole that many of us have been (joyfully) stuck in for most of our lives. Once you’re there, just pick a series, any series, and go with it. Don’t worry about continuity, but if something interests you, then track it down and read it.
