After The Batman, What's Next for You as A Reader?

The scene: You’re leaving the theater having just seen The Batman. You now stand on the horizon of wonder, thinking “After The Batman, what’s next for me as a reader? What should I read to further the experience of the movie?”

Speaking of “What’s next?”…

After the Watchmen movie’s release in 2009, DC published the “After Watchmen…What’s Next?” initiative of value-priced reprints. These were debut issues of series or story arcs whose aesthetics (be it writing, art, themes of a given story, etc., etc.) were similar in tone to those of Watchmen.

The idea was to hook readers (both established and brand-new) who were fresh from the Watchmen movie into a comic tale that would further their experience of the movie from a thematic and/or aesthetic standpoint.

Here’s an example of a Batman-themed book from the program:

Once you’ve seen The Batman (or if you’ve already seen it, depending on when you read this), what titles and/or stories will be your next point to continuing the experience of the movie (After Watchmen…What’s Next?-style) as your ask yourself “What’s next?”

:joy: You know there are other Batman stories, right?

Besides The Dark Knight Strikes Again, DKIII and The Golden Child.

After the flick, I’m finally going to read Batman/Catwoman. I’ve been meaning to, but it always got pushed aside for higher priority reads.

I’m also reading current issues of Batman and Catwoman, so those are post-movie go-tos as well.

I know. Besides it most of my Bats reads are various one shots from the Golden and Silver Age.

OOC: It is my favorite book and changed my life, so I frequently return to it.

Completely understand.

Hush is my all-time favorite Batman story, so I frequently return to it, as you do TDKR.

I’ll be re-reading Hush soon, but not because of The Batman. Rather, the 20th anniversary is what’s stoking my latest re-read.

DC, any chance of a Batman: Hush: The 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition by chance?

I don’t know that I have a post-movie list per se, but there is one Batman run that I intend to get to at some point in the not too far future (how’s that for a commitment?): The time when Bruce got beat by Bane and Gotham decended into No Man’s Land (I think that’s what they called it). Seems like a Death & Return of Superman sized chunk of stories that I should get to at some point.

Cataclysm and/or Aftermath? Or just No Man’s Land proper?

NML is pretty damn rad. Long, but very good.

See I have no idea what you just said :joy:.

I just hear folks talk about No Man’s Land a lot, feel like I should give it a go at least once.

Happy to clarify! :clark_hv_4:

  • Cataclysm is the story that led to No Man’s Land. Its where the earthquake that levels Gotham occurs.

  • Aftershock (I knew “after” was part of the title, somehow ) is what comes after the earthquake, and before Gotham City is federally declared a no man’s land.

  • No Man’s Land is the saga of Batman and his allies trying to maintain order in what’s left of Gotham as his enemies slice it up for their own use. Superman makes a guest appearance, and Lex…well, I’ll let you discover what he does. :clark_hv_4:

Thanks, man.

Looks like I had my wires crossed. I thought Bruce got broken by Bane before/during No Man’s Land. Looks like I have two Batman runs to check out.

I’m reading Gotham Central next.

'Twas before, in '93. By the time NML rolls around ('99), he’s all better.

I’m kind of hankering for a NML re-read, the more we talk about it.

Gotham Central’s fantastic. Good pick.
